Hampshire have signed former England batsman Owais Shah for the ongoing Natwest T20 Blast on a match-to-match basis.

Shah is likely to make his debut for Hampshire against Sussex at Hove on May 23.

Shah retired from four-day cricket last season and recently represented the Hobart Hurricanes in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL).

Shah has earned the reputation of being a Twenty20 specialist and as a result, he has played for the Cape Cobras, Delhi Daredevils, Dhaka Gladiators, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Wellington.

“I was delighted to hear from (director of cricket) Giles White when he approached me about joining the club and I’m very happy to be here,” Shah told the club’s website. “I’d like to think I can offer some experience to the team and get some runs along the way.

“I know they’ve got a very good formula here at Hampshire, but I just want to fit into the team, find out my role and then play to the best of my ability.

“As long as the team functions well and we all work hard for each other, the results will look after themselves.”

White added: “We are missing a few of players at the moment so we have brought in Owais, who is a player with a lot of experience and a lot of quality. He’s someone we had spoken to during the winter and, with Neil McKenzie not coming back this year, he’s certainly been on our radar.”
