Clarke remained unbeaten on 161

Australia captain Michael Clarke cracked a fabulous unbeaten century to add to South Africa’s misery on the second day of the third Test in Cape Town.

Clarke was well supported by all-rounder Steven Smith, who scored an outstanding half-century.

Starting out the day on 331/3, Clarke Smith converted their 114-run partnership into a 184-run partnership, during which Clarke brought up his 27th Test century and Smith his half-century, before Smith was clean bowled by Dean Elgar for 84 off 155 balls, which included nine boundaries and three sixes.

Clarke and Shane Watson kept the runs flowing with a 55-run partnership before Watson was caught by Hashim Amla at long-off off the bowling of Jean Paul (JP) Duminy for 40.

Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin only made 13 runs before he was caught by Amla at mid-off off the bowling of Duminy.

Duminy struck again the very next ball as Mitchell Johnson was caught behind for a golden duck.

Clarke and Ryan Harris put together an unbeaten five-run partnership before the heavens parted and the players were ushered into the pavilion for an early tea break.

However, since the rain did not show any signs of receding, the umpires had no choice but to bring play to an end.

Clarke finished on 161 off 301 balls, which included 17 boundaries, while Harris remained unbeaten on four runs, which came off a boundary.

Duminy was the pick of the South African bowlers with four wickets, while Elgar, Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Australia ended the day on 494/7 and will continue batting tomorrow at 10:00 local time or 08:00 GMT.
