Chandila is still “in a state of shock” of the charges against him
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) match-fixing hype having slightly died down over the past few weeks, Rajasthan Royals spinner Ajit Chandila brought it back into the media spotlight after claiming that he had “no clue about the spot-fixing controversy”.
Chandila, who was indicted in the match-fixing scandal along with India pace bowler Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan, added that he was “never approached” by any bookies.
“I have no clue about the spot-fixing controversy,” he told Zee News. “I have never been approached by anybody.
“People have seen my performance in last two seasons of the IPL. I am clean and I trust the judiciary.”
Chandila was one of 39 people to be named in a chargesheet filed by Delhi police on July 30.
All three players have been charged under sections 420 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code, which relate to fraud, cheating and criminal conspiracy.
They have also been charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), which was a special law passed by the Maharashtra provincial government in an attempt to wipe out crime syndicates and terrorism.
Crimes classed under the MCOCA carry much stricter punishments.
Chandila also noted that he was stunned by the charges against him.
“My family and I are in a state of shock that such charges are being levelled against me,” he said. “I am a cricketer not a terrorist.
“My family has suffered a lot, and my brother was hospitalised the day I was arrested. But I have the support of my family. And soon, people will know the truth. I am innocent. I will make a comeback soon.”
