Gayle is currently within touching distance of Watson on the rankings
West Indies flamboyant opener Chris Gayle has announced that he is the best Twenty20 batsman no matter what the official International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings may say.
Gayle is currently in second place on the rankings, with Australia big-hitter Shane Watson holding on to the top spot.
Gayle has without a doubt established himself as one of the best Twenty20 batsmen in the world, especially after having made millions of dollars by representing 10 different Twenty20 sides in six countries.
“I don’t mind the title of being the best Twenty20 player,” News.com.au quoted Gayle as saying. “I play T20 around the world, I think I’ve dominated all around the world, getting a few hundreds. It’s one of those things you have to accept.
“In the internationals it doesn’t show I’m the No.1 T20 player because you have Brendon McCullum, who has done well in internationals the last few months. He’s a very dangerous player.”
However, Gayle knows that competition for the top spot has become extremely fierce, especially with Australia’s David Warner and New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum having entered the frame.
The big Jamaican also admitted that India’s Virender Sehwag has the ability to dethrone all other batsmen.
“David Warner and Shane Watson are devastating in T20 as well,” Gayle added. “It’s going to be a challenge to try and maintain (being) at the top. And I haven’t even mentioned (Virender) Sehwag and guys like that.”
