A BATTING WITH BIMAL BREAKING REPORT: Shane Watson should be opening the batting for Australia, says Herschelle Gibbs

Gibbs believes Australia are making a fatal mistake in not allowing Watson to open

Former South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs has announced the Australian all-rounder Shane Watson should be opening the batting for the national team instead of coming in at number three or four.

Watson averages 43 while opening the batting compared to 28.5 while coming in at one down.

“Watto was one of the most consistent opening batters in world cricket,” News.com.au quoted Gibbs as saying. “You can see the value of having him as an opening batter.

“I don’t think he adds the same dimension at No.3. I think the selectors will probably need to try and find a combination.”

Gibbs also noted that Australia need to find an experienced opener to accompany Watson.

“Definitely I would have Watto at the top but you need to find a partner,” Gibbs added. “Sri Lanka might be a stern Test as Australia is still in a rebuilding phase.”

Talking about batsman Phillip Hughes taking over Ricky Ponting’s spot on the Test roster, Gibbs said: “I have seen Phil play a few times, (he is) young, his eye is good, a very attacking player.”
