Starc performed extremely well throughout the World Twenty20

Former Australia pace bowler Jason Gillespie has revealed that he believes young pace bowler Mitchell Starc will be the future spearhead bowler of the national team’s pace bowling attack since he has risen to stardom in an extremely short amount of time.

Gillespie stated that the national team selectors should include Starc in the squad for the first Test against South Africa on November 9 at ‘The Gabba’ in Brisbane.

Starc did play county cricket with Yorkshire this year, where Gillespie is the head coach, and Cricket Australia were intent on making the young pace bowler follow a routine of balling a certain number of deliveries before taking a rest.

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Gillespie as saying: “He would certainly be in my first-Test team. Left-arm variety is good for Australia, and from a selection point of view he ticks a lot of boxes. The left-armer creates rough for the right-arm spinner, so that is one small factor. The fact is he bowls 90 miles an hour and swings the ball.”

Gillespie also labelled Starc as the “most improved” player out of all of the young bowlers who have earned themselves a spot on the national team roster, and also credited the young bowler for continuously sticking to his training schedule and routine.

“It was quite strict and we had to adhere to that, and we did, and Mitch has to take a lot of credit for it, he’s an absolute wicket taker. He keeps it pretty simple, really, he runs in and hits the track up front. He bowls over and around the wicket and he bowls fast, full and straight,” Gillespie said.
