Vodafone claim that the SMS was a complete and honest mistake

Even though the 2012 Indian Premier League (IPL) has come to an end with the Kolkata Knight Riders being crowned as champions, there was a huge controversy involving Vodafone which has left a lot of fans becoming skeptical of whether the tournament has been fixed from the very beginning.

The controversy relates to a SMS error by Vodafone, whereby they told their subscribers that the Chennai Super Kings were going to be in the finals of the tournament long before they had even qualified.

The SMS, which said: “IPL FINALS! Watch KKR vs CSK battle it out this Sunday…” was sent out hours before the finals qualifier in which Chennai defeated the Delhi Daredevils.

Subscribers of the network were extremely confused and suspicious of the SMS, and it was only a matter of time before the information spread like wildfire on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Vodafone, have admitted to the mistake, and the company’s official spokesperson said: “Vodafone did detect this error in the IPL promotional verbiage late on Friday… The error from our end was in assuming that KKR and CSK will be playing the finals.”

However, Vodafone also claimed that the SMS incident only took place in Hyderabad, and did not spread to any of the other major Indian cities.

The company, further mentioned that the mistake occurred due to a misunderstanding about the format of qualifying.

“This was purely an inadvertent promotional campagin error that was corrected immediately upon detection,” the Vodafone spokesperson said.
