Nicol onslaught hands New Zealand series win

Nicol blitzed his way to 146

New Zealand were all business as they trashed Zimbabwe all over Whangarei to make a commanding total of 372 runs.

Opener Rob Nicol was in no mood to hang around as he went after every Zimbabwe bowler, making 146 runs from 134 deliveries, which included 10 boundaries and six massive sixes.

Nicol, who received the Man of the Match award for his jaw-dropping batting display, said: “Sometimes you have some luck and I did today, so quite happy.”

Nicol was backed up by other fiery performances from Martin Guptill, who made 77 runs from 80 balls, Jacob Oram, who hammered 59 runs off just 28 balls and Tom Latham who had 48 runs from 28 deliveries.

With every Zimbabwean bowler going for over six runs an over, the only shining spot was Paul Utseya who took three wickets for 71 runs.

New Zealand’s score of 372 meant that they scored almost seven and a half runs an over.

Set a monstrous target of 373 to win, Zimbabwe struggled from the start when their top four batsmen were back in the pavilion with only 35 runs on the board.

However, wicketkeeper, Tatenda Taibu and Elton Chigumbura both made half centuries in a vain attempt to get as close to the target as possible, but in the end Zimbabwe lost by 141 runs.

Jacob Oram had the best bowling figures for New Zealand, picking up three wickets for 29 runs.

New Zealand Captain, Brendon McCullum, who was pleased with his side’s performance, said: “Played much better than in Dunedin…pretty close to a complete performance, bowling was very good, batting outstanding, all the guys were superb.”

However, Zimbabwean Captain Brendan Taylor had quite the opposite reaction to his team and said: “The guys have struggled with the bat so good to see a few contribute today, top order needs to come back stronger.”

With this win, New Zealand have clinched the series 2-0, with one last ODI remaining to play at Napier on the 9th of February.
