Mahendra Singh Dhoni was India’s saviour when he saw India home against Australia with only two balls to spare at the Adelaide Oval.

Dhoni, who is also Captain of the Indian side, smashed a massive 112 metre six, hit a no-ball for two runs and clobbered another three runs in the final over of the match to clinch victory for the tourists.

Captain Dhoni, said: “This six was very special. The World Cup six was too but we could have done that with singles.”

However, before everyone were wooed by Dhoni, Australia batted first and debutant Peter Forrest made a magical 66, which was nicely followed by David Hussey’s quick-fire 72.

The pick of the Indian bowlers’ were Vinay Kumar and Umesh Yadav, who both claimed two Australian wickets.

India, set a target of 270 by the Australians, started off in good fashion, with opener Gautam Gambhir striking a magnificent 92 runs. However, with regular strikes by the Australian bowlers, the Indians were put under pressure, before Dhoni arrived and finished the game off in style.

Gambhir, who was also Man of the Match, said: “Any runs in Australia is special. Dhoni is a good finisher and he stays calm and that’s important.”

Australia’s Clint Mckay was the best of the best from the bowlers as he took three Indian wickets.

Australian Captain, Michael Clarke, was visibly frustrated by the loss. “Dhoni is a very good one-day player. We were 10-20 short and the fielding was sloppy” he said.

Captain Dhoni also had some special words for teammate Yuvraj Singh, who is recovering after having surgery to remove a cancerous tumour in his lung. “Yuvraj will get well soon and I believe he will come out strong.”

India now hope to carry this momentum into their next match when they face Sri Lanka on the 14th of February at the Adelaide Oval.
