Nixon allegedly mimicked an Indian accent when Panesar was coming on to bowl

The public address announcer at England’s two-day warm-up match against the Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI has been fired after making inappropriate comments about spinner Monty Panesar.

David Nixon, an ABC producer, was sacked after allegedly mimicking an Indian accent when announcing that Panesar was coming on to bowl.

According to reports, neither Panesar nor any of the England camp heard the comments made by Nixon.

“Cricket Australia deemed the conduct of the PA announcer as inappropriate,” a Cricket Australia spokesman said. “So it was decided he would take no further part in the match.”

Nixon started to get himself into hot water when England batsman Joe Root called for a drink while batting.

“Joe Root calls for another drink,” Nixon had said in a sarcastic tone.

Just a few minutes later, the umpires called for a drinks break, which prompted Nixon to say: “Now it’s time for everyone to have a drink – including Joe Root.”

When Root was dismissed, Nixon said: “You can go and have another drink now, Joe.”

Root ended up leaving the ground with an upset stomach later on.

Nixon also poked fun when spinner Michael Beer was coming on to bowl for the Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI, saying: “We’re to have Beer before lunch.”
